Your views on a special place for nature
Local people are being asked to share their thoughts on plans for the future management of a National Nature Reserve (NNR) in Strathspey.
Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) wants to hear from people with an interest in Craigellachie NNR, to help prepare a new ten-year plan for the reserve.
National Nature Reserves are special places where people can enjoy the best of Scotland’s nature and Craigellachie is a popular destination for locals, as well as the many thousands who visit Aviemore each year.
Wayne Fitter, reserve manager for SNH, said: “Craigellachie birch woodland is one of the finest examples of high canopy birch wood in Scotland. Its high value wildlife, including Peregrine falcon, so close to Aviemore is ideal for connecting people with nature. We’re really grateful to all the people who help to keep the reserve in such fantastic condition. Local people and other volunteers play an important part in reserve management, and they are proud of their association with this special place. We’d love to hear your views about what you love about it, if anything would improve your experience on the reserve, and how and what you’d like to learn about the Reserve.”
The NNR’s way-marked trail network provides good access opportunities and appropriate, well-placed interpretation contributes to visitors’ understanding and appreciation of the reserve’s features. The viewpoint provides a breath-taking overview of the western Cairngorms and surrounding countryside, including one of the largest areas of native woodland in Scotland.
SNH has published a draft plan and a consultation leaflet and will be holding a free drop-in event on Monday 14 May 2018, from 4pm to 7pm, at Aviemore Youth Hostel.
Consultation leaflets and more information may be downloaded from the NNR website (https://www.nature.scot/craigellachie-nnr-consultation) or by e -mailing SNH at NNR@snh.gov.uk.
The consultation period runs from 30th April 2018 to 11th June
