St Cyrus public consultation begins

Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) want to hear from people with an interest in St Cyrus National Nature Reserve (NNR) to help prepare a new ten-year plan for the reserve.

This nationally important site has recently become a mecca for whale watchers. The reserve is a unique site: a long sweep of coastal habitats sheltered by sandstone cliffs. The long expanse of dunes and species rich grassland also attracts plenty of visitors.

Therese Alampo, the reserve manager, said, “St Cyrus is a really special place and we’re really grateful to all the people who help keep it that way. We would like to get people’s comments and suggestions about what they love about it and how we could make it even better.”

SNH have published a draft plan and a consultation leaflet and will be holding a drop-in event as part of a Doors Open Day on Saturday, 16 September. Consultation leaflets and more information may be downloaded from the NNR website (http://www.nnr-scotland.org.uk/st-cyrus/) or by e -mailing SNH at stcyrus50@snh.gov.uk.

The consultation period runs from 9 September until 13 October 2017.

Also taking place for Doors Open Day is a poetry walk, involving a stroll along the beach at St Cyrus to explore tales of salmon fishing, bait and lost boats along the coast north of the river North Esk. The walk takes place from 2 to 4pm. Doors Open Day at St Cyrus takes place on 16 September, and is an all-day event. Phone 01674 830736 for more information.

Helping more people experience and enjoy nature in this way is one of the priorities of the Scottish Biodiversity Strategy.
