St Cyrus Nature Reserve visitors advised to take different path after landslide
Managers of St Cyrus National Nature Reserve are keen to highlight that the reserve is open, after a landslide affected the main cliff path. Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) is advising that even though the main path is currently closed, most of reserve is unaffected and open to the public.
People can safely access the reserve from the visitor centre car parks. The Woodstone path, which also provides access down the cliff, is still open for pedestrians from the village to the nature reserve.
The path leading down from Beach Road to the reserve is currently closed. There are still some loose rocks and soil overhanging, which need to be professionally removed and the path made safe again. The path will remain closed until this is done over the next few weeks.
Theresa Alampo, SNH’s St Cyrus reserve manager, commented:
“We are asking the public please don’t try to use the main cliff path. There is still loose material and it’s even more prone than usual to landslides in the current conditions. The Woodstone path is a good alternative route from the village to the nature reserve – but do take care, as this path can become slippery, like anywhere at this time of year.”
St Cyrus Reserve is one of the most picturesque sections of coastline in north-east Scotland. It boasts the magnificent sandy sweep of Montrose Bay, towering volcanic cliffs, yellow dunes, and a spectacular wildflower meadow that supports a number of rare plants and insects.

To reach St Cyrus from Montrose, head five miles north on the A92 coastal road. St Cyrus NNR is signposted on the right, immediately before the Northwater Bridge over the River Esk. Follow the single track road for 1.5 miles to the car park and visitor centre. The nearest bus stop is in St Cyrus (1.5 miles) on the Aberdeen - Montrose bus route.
