Last year NatureScot appealed to the nation for their treasured photos of Scotland’s rivers, coasts, seas, lochs and canals, to feature in a charity calendar marking Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Waters.

Keeping with the coastal theme - the Scottish Seabird Centre, the conservation and education charity based in North Berwick, was chosen by NatureScot staff to receive the fundraising total of more than £1000.

Jess Thompson, Marketing Manager for the Centre said:

“We've been connecting people and nature for almost 20 years, inspiring them to love and care for our iconic seabirds and marine wildlife. With our visitor centre closed, due to the coronavirus restrictions, we’ve lost a vital income source for our charitable activities. We were delighted NatureScot staff chose us to support and we want to thank everyone who made a donation for one of the stunning calendars.

“With 2021 being the Year of Coast and Waters, we’re really excited by the range of marine events and activities we have planned. We look forward to welcoming members and visitors back to the Centre as soon as it's safe to do so.”

The competition generated over 700 photographic entries - from underwater wildlife encounters to journeys through scenic waterscapes, spanning the length and breadth of Scotland. Copies of the limited edition calendar were offered to the general public, schools and NatureScot staff; and given as competition prizes.

Francesca Osowska, NatureScot Chief Executive said:

“We appreciate how difficult it‘s been for many charities during the pandemic and we're delighted to help support the Scottish Seabird Centre in its important work. They are passionate about encouraging people outdoors to experience Scotland’s marine environment, and we all know that making space for nature in our lives, both physically and mentally, can make us happier and healthier.

Francesca added:

“Staying local is vital during current restrictions, but when the centre re-opens I would encourage everyone to visit this fantastic national resource, meet the dedicated staff and experience the stunning marine life for themselves.”

The final calendar is available to download and charity donations are still welcome via JustGiving.

Notes to editors

Year of Coasts and Waters - 2020 was designated Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Waters, to spotlight, celebrate and promote opportunities to experience and enjoy Scotland’s unrivalled coasts and waters, encouraging responsible engagement and participation. Following input and feedback from the tourism and events industry, there has been strong support and a commitment from Scottish Government to rollover the celebratory year into 2021.

The Scottish Seabird Centre, based on the edge of the Firth of Forth in the seaside town of North Berwick, East Lothian, gives unparalleled access to amazing coastal seascapes and underwater environments. These include the Bass Rock which supports the world’s largest colony of northern gannets.

Scottish Natural Heritage was rebranded to ‘NatureScot’ in August 2020.

NatureScot is Scotland's nature agency. Responding to the twin crises of biodiversity loss and climate change, we work to protect and restore nature by inspiring everyone to value our natural world. Our goal is a nature-rich, net-zero future for Scotland. For more information, visit our website at www.nature.scot
