Looking for Loch Leven nature detectives
Budding nature detectives will have the chance to search for beasties great and small on Saturday, 4 April, at Loch Leven.
This free Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) walk through Levenmouth woods is a hunt for the early signs of spring, and evidence of birds and other creatures that may be seen, heard, or smelled along the way – from butterflies to whooper swans and otters to swallows.
Craig Nisbet, Loch Leven reserve officer, said:
“Our Tracks and Signs walk promises to be fun for the whole family over Easter weekend – just remember to bring all of your senses, particularly your sense of humour!”
To book a place, call the reserve office on 01577 864439. The event takes places on Saturday, 4 April from 10am to 12pm, meeting at the Findatie car park.
Waterproofs and stout footwear are recommended. Binoculars are a bonus, but will be available to borrow if needed. There will be a selection of ID guides, bug pots, butterfly nets and hand lenses. There may also be an opportunity after the walk for a bird-ringing demonstration with reserve staff.

Loch Leven is Scotland’s largest lowland loch and one of the most important sites for waterfowl in Britain. Its unique environment attracts not only the largest concentration of breeding ducks anywhere in the UK, but also many thousands of migratory ducks, geese and swans every autumn and winter, as well as boasting an interesting variety of wildlife, plants and trees.
