Great free family events at St Cyrus this summer

Looking for something to do with the kids this summer? There are plenty of fun, free events taking place at St Cyrus national nature reserve this summer, involving fairies, fish, traditional Scottish music - and even hoverflies.

First up is the chance to make beautiful useful items from natural sources and learn about how our ancestors lived, with Karen Hudson of Rhynie Wifies on Sunday, 17 July. This event also includes learning and identifying medicinal plants. It’s a drop-in event for all ages and takes place from 10:30am to 3:30pm.

Next up on Friday, 22 July is a hoverfly identification workshop, run by the Northeast Scotland Biologicial Records Centre (NESBReC). Learn about the many different species present in the reserve, led by local hoverfly expert, Geoff Wilkinson. This event is suitable for both beginners and those wishing to improve their hoverfly identification. Booking is required by emailing glenn.roberts@aberdeenshire.gov.uk

It’s a big day on the reserve on the 26th July, with fun workshops for children throughout the day by Mandy Tulloch of Mud Pie Adventures. This includes ‘Fairies and Fish!’ from 10:30am to 12:00pm, when fairies visit the St Cyrus seaside. Children can make a door for an elf or fairy and make a home in the sand dunes. The same day, find about local fish species and have a go at gyotaku, the very simple Japanese technique of fish printing from 1:30-2:30 and 3:00-4:00pm. Participants can take their works of art home. Booking is required, and the event is recommended for those under 10 years of age.

Finally, on Saturday, 30 July, the reserve welcomes the Feis Rois National Ceilidh Orchestra back, with their Scottish traditional music on the beach from 2-4pm. No booking is required.

Theresa Alampo, St Cyrus reserve manager, commented:

“We have a summer full of great events at St Cyrus – and they’re all free! So we hope to see lots of people out enjoying the beauty of the reserve, learning more about wildlife, and just having fun at our events. There’s something for every taste. If you’re thinking ahead, a great way to wind up the summer will be to join us to relax and take in the beauty of St Cyrus reserve while listening to wonderful Feis Rois orchestra!”

For more information or to reserve spaces at events, call the reserve office on 01674 830736. All under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

St Cyrus reserve is one of the most picturesque sections of coastline in north-east Scotland. It boasts the magnificent sandy sweep of Montrose Bay, towering volcanic cliffs, yellow dunes, and a spectacular wildflower meadow that supports a number of rare plants and insects.
