Eat Drink Hebrides Trail launched

The brand new Eat Drink Hebrides trail was launched this weekend, giving visitors a chance to easily discover the excellent food and drink on offer in the Outer Hebrides.

All kinds of food and drink are famed across the islands, including such favourites as Stornoway black pudding and hand-harvested seasalt. Featuring 35 island businesses, the trail highlights where to buy fish and shellfish direct from the boat, venison straight off the hill and wild goose from the machairs of Uist, as well as experience the taste of the Outer Hebrides in some fantastic restaurants and cafes. The trail points visitors towards locally-grown meat, vegetables, craft beer and artisan cheeses, as well as excellent smokehouses and a brand new distillery.

The self-guided Eat Drink Hebrides Trail has been put together by Outer Hebrides Tourism, with funding support from Scottish Natural Heritage, HIE, CNES and the Community Food Fund. Eye-catching signage, a leaflet and an online guide show visitors how to make the most of the great food and drink on offer in the islands.

Speaking at the launch in Harris, Ian Fordham from Outer Hebrides Tourism said, “We are delighted with the response to the new Eat Drink Hebrides Trail across the whole of the Outer Hebrides. Food and drink is a hugely important part of what we offer to our visitors, and the new trail will enable people to easily find and buy the best produce from the Outer Hebrides”

SNH Argyll & Hebrides unit manager, David MacLennan, added, “We’re delighted to support the Eat Drink Hebrides trail. From the sea bed to the hill tops, the natural environment of the Outer Hebrides supports a well-stocked natural larder supplying both local consumers and international markets. Harvested sustainably, products like shellfish, venison and goose will be available for people to enjoy, and help support the local economy.”
