Discover Loch Leven on June 14

Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) is hosting Discovery Day with help from 17 other organisations, all of which help look after the wildlife and cultural heritage of the loch, as well as people’s access and enjoyment of this fantastic place.

There will be craft activities and challenges for kids and families, and the chance to get up close to underwater beasties, newts and moths and find out more about birds, native squirrels, dragonflies and bats.

Participants can also share their ideas for the next reserve management plan, find out what the community are doing at Portmoak Moss, and learn how important clean water is for wildlife and how non-native species threaten our wildlife.

SNH’s Loch Leven reserve manager, Neil Mitchell, said:

“There’s really something for everyone at Discovery Day, so I hope you’ll come out and join us. There will be bird ringing demonstrations, help with how to work the trail app – or why not have a go at fly casting or willow weave your own dragonfly?”

Discovery Day takes place on Sunday, 14 June from 12-4pm at Kirkgate Park, Kinross.

Most stands and activities are under cover in the main marquee or smaller tents and there is level access over grass close to the footpath. The Green Hotel will be selling food and soft drinks on site.

The same week, another free event, Burleigh Botany, takes place. The botanical walk takes place June 16 from 6pm to 8pm, and booking is required. Take a walk around Burleigh Sands with SNH staff, taking a closer look at the variety of plants in the summer months. Call 01577 86 44 39 to book, and meet at Burleigh Sands car park.

Loch Leven is Scotland’s largest lowland loch and one of the most important sites for waterfowl in Britain. Its unique environment attracts not only the largest concentration of breeding ducks anywhere in the UK, but also many thousands of migratory ducks, geese and swans every autumn and winter, as well as boasting an interesting variety of wildlife, plants and trees.
