Artworks in the frame at SNH’s Taynish reserve this summer

Rob Mulholland’s ‘Gathering’ and Lesley Burr’s ‘Habitation’ are attracting visitors to this beautiful reserve.

And from 15 August it will also feature exhibits under Snapberry 6 – a photographic project run by SNH. This innovative scheme was last year highly commended in the Nature of Scotland awards and encourages young people into the environment using digital imagery.

At the reserve Rob’s sculptures are situated along the path from the Mill car park to the shore and have proved to be a talking point for locals and visitors alike. His mirrored people deal with the fragility of the human body compared to the strength and essence of the human spirit. Lesley created five site-specific mosaics inspired by the Taynish wildlife – and as her exhibition is in the old Piggery it is fitting that the first artwork she created was a pig.

Lesley’s inspiration was the fact the pigs once lived in grand accommodation at which they were fed via a hatch in the floor of Taynish House kitchen, the food carried downstream.

Also on display are a few printed images of her paintings exploring concern for polar bears’ habitat, and favourite archetypal themes of love, loss and faith.

Now in its sixth year, the Snapberry project is more popular than ever. And this year it was run over two days due to being oversubscribed by demand from Lochgilphead High School students.

Lorne Gill, the Scottish Natural Heritage photographer, worked with pupils to ensure they got the best out of their day at Taynish.

The inspiring images captured by the students are on show as part of the Snapberry6 exhibition at Taynish Mill from 15 August for the ArtMap Argyll Open Studio Weekend from 22 to 25 August.
